History & Character
The Terem Palace was built in 1635–1636 for Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich, the first Romanov ruler. Master masons Bazhen Ogurtsov, Antip Konstantinov, Trefil Sharutin and Larion Ushakov constructed stone royal living quarters above earlier palace fabric.
Carved white-stone window frames, coloured tiles and a gilded roof give the building its distinctive character. Its polychrome appearance reflects restoration as well as seventeenth-century design. The palace survives within the Grand Kremlin Palace complex, which the museum identifies as part of the presidential residence. A historical description does not establish public access to these interiors.
