Count Mikhail Vorontsov
Count, later prince / military officer / governor / palace commissioner
Life: 1782–1856
Who they were
Mikhail Vorontsov combined a military career with service as governor-general, taking up his southern imperial administration in 1823. His Alupka palace was built in 1828–1848 to a design by Edward Blore. The museum’s history also records the labour of serf stonemasons brought from Vorontsov estates. The palace expresses an aristocratic household’s resources and status; its commissioner was an imperial official, not a Romanov sovereign.
