Gatchina: apartments and rebuilding /
The reconstruction begun under Nicholas I reshaped Gatchina Palace. Architect Roman Kuzmin directed the works of 1844–1856: the Kitchen and Arsenal quadrangles were rebuilt, with state and private apartments for the imperial family in the Arsenal wing. The Kitchen wing church was also rebuilt. Work in the central building included heating and parquet repairs while preserving the memory of Paul I. The museum describes visits by Nicholas I and Alexander II for receptions, balls and hunts, rather than regular occupation. The construction dates do not establish the dates of these visits.
