Creative Authors of the Russian Court — 18th–early 20th centuries
Historical focus: 18th–early 20th centuries. Dates describe the main subject, not the publication date; later afterlives may also appear.
Russian palaces and grand hotels were collective works. The sovereign or grand duke may have commissioned the residence, but architects, decorators, artists, engineers and landscape designers gave it physical form. Royal Palaces therefore treats creative authors as full People entities.
Architecture
Rastrelli defined the monumental Baroque language of the Winter Palace, Peterhof and Tsarskoye Selo. Cameron introduced a refined classical vocabulary at Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk. Brenna transformed Pavlovsk and Gatchina for Paul I. Rinaldi shaped Oranienbaum and the Marble Palace. Rossi turned Mikhailovsky Palace into a complete urban and landscape ensemble. Stackenschneider became one of the central palace architects of Nicholas I's era. Krasnov defined the late Romanov architecture of Crimea.
Interiors
Palace interiors often passed through several creative generations. Alexander Brullov transformed the Marble Palace. Andrei Voronikhin reconstructed Pavlovsk after the 1803 fire. Historicist palaces layered one designer over another. Interior authorship therefore needs its own field.
Landscape
The park is not background. Pietro Gonzaga shaped the theatrical landscape of Pavlovsk. Adam Menelaws designed both Cottage Palace and the romantic layout of Alexandria. Master gardeners such as Wendelsdorf, Gombel and Ehrler turned architectural concepts into living landscapes.
Hotels
The same logic applies to luxury hospitality. William Walcot, Lev Kekushev, Mikhail Vrubel and Alexander Golovin helped make the Metropol a complete work of art. Fyodor Lidval turned the Astoria into a modern luxury machine. The creative author belongs in hospitality history just as much as the owner.
Rule
For every major palace, villa, estate or grand hotel, Royal Palaces should ask: Who designed the architecture? Who designed the interiors? Who designed the landscape? Who created the defining art and decoration? Who engineered the innovations? If the answer materially shaped the identity of the place, that person receives a People record.
