MEDIEVAL EGYPT · RULING SYSTEM

The Mamluk Sultanate

The Palace of the Sultan Above Cairo

Not a Conventional Dynasty

Mamluk succession did not operate like a stable hereditary European house. Royal Palaces therefore classifies the period as a sovereign ruling system rather than forcing it into a dynastic template.

The Citadel as Court

Mamluk sultans transformed the inherited Ayyubid Citadel with palaces, audience halls and ceremonial architecture, especially under al-Nasir Muhammad.

Why It Matters

Palace architecture belongs to sovereign power, not only to hereditary genealogy. The Mamluk Citadel is a central example.
