Baron Édouard Empain

Baron / Belgian businessman / palace commissioner

Palace commissioned: 1907–1911

Édouard Empain was a Belgian businessman whose economic work earned him a baronial title from the Belgian king. He commissioned his Heliopolis palace between 1907 and 1911, employing the French architect Alexandre Marcel. Its Indian-inspired architecture expressed the status of a private owner in the new district. Empain belongs here as a titled entrepreneur and patron, rather than a member of Egypt’s ruling dynasty.

Habib Pasha El-Sakakini

Pasha / private palace commissioner

Palace construction: 1897

Habib Pasha El-Sakakini commissioned the palace bearing his name in Cairo’s El-Daher district in 1897. The surrounding square and neighbourhood also preserve his name. Cairo Governorate describes the residence’s elaborate Rococo character. His entry documents a private patron’s contribution to the city’s residential landscape; the palace’s title does not establish that it belonged to Egypt’s ruling dynasty.

Amir Sayf al-Din Taz

Mamluk emir / senior court officer / palace commissioner

Period: fourteenth century

Taz al-Nasiri rose through the Mamluk military hierarchy to become a senior court officer, known as Amir Majlis. Cairo Governorate identifies him as the patron of the palace on Seyoufia Street and connects its construction with his marriage into the sultan’s family. His residence belongs to the world of powerful Mamluk emirs: a court officer’s household should not be confused with the sovereign’s own palace.

Amir Bashtak al-Nasiri

Mamluk emir / military commander / palace commissioner

Palace construction: 1334–1339

Bashtak al-Nasiri was a commander serving Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun. The Cairo Governorate account also identifies him as the husband of one of the sultan’s daughters. He built his residence between 1334 and 1339 on part of the former Fatimid Eastern Palace site. His marriage and military office explain his court connections, while the building remained an emir’s residence.

Pasha / governor / palace commissioner

Palace construction: 1851

Hassan Fouad Pasha Al-Manasterly commissioned his residence on Rawda Island in 1851. Cairo Governorate identifies him as a governor during Saeed Pasha’s rule.
