18th Dynasty

History & Character

Amarna’s North Palace was arranged around courts leading towards columned halls, a small throne room and residential chambers. It also contained animal enclosures and a sunken garden. The celebrated Green Room was decorated with images of marshland birds and plants.

Inscriptions associate the palace’s later use with Princess Meritaten. Its original occupant is less certain: Nefertiti and Kiya have both been proposed. Excavation began in the 1920s, and some outlines visible today are modern markers or partial reconstructions. These should be distinguished from original columns, foundations and other surviving fabric.
