Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Pasha
Statesman / art collector / residence owner
1877–1953
Who they were
Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil was an Egyptian statesman and collector with close cultural ties to France. He studied law in Paris and married the French musician Emilienne Hector Luce. Their shared interest in art shaped the collection now associated with their former home in Giza.
His public career included service as Minister of Agriculture in 1937 and President of the Senate in 1939–1940. He also helped establish the Cairo Society of Friends of Fine Arts in 1924. Collecting was therefore part of a wider engagement with artistic institutions, alongside political office.
After his death in 1953, the collection passed to Emilienne. Her later bequest to the Egyptian state made the residence and its contents the basis of a public museum. The institution commemorates both spouses, and its official title preserves their joint association with the house.
