Sadullah Pasha

Ottoman statesman / diplomat / later residence owner

Sâdullah Paşa

Residence acquired: 1861

Sadullah Pasha gave his name to the waterfront residence at Çengelköy after buying it in 1861. The building is older: the architectural history dates it to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century and records an earlier association with Mehmed Ağa. Sadullah should therefore be understood as a later owner, rather than the original builder. The surviving domestic wing helps place his household within the residential culture of the Bosphorus.

Pargalı İbrahim Pasha

Ottoman grand vizier / palace patron

Grand vizier: 1523–1536

İbrahim Pasha served as grand vizier under Süleyman I from 1523 to 1536. His name is attached to the masonry palace overlooking Istanbul’s former Hippodrome, now associated with the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. The building predates or incorporates phases earlier than his tenure: the museum catalogue records renovation in 1520–1521. He should therefore be identified as a major patron and namesake, without assuming he designed or originally built the whole complex.
