Fethi Ahmed Pasha
Ottoman officer and diplomat / minister / residence owner and restoration patron
1801–1858
Who they were
Fethi Ahmed Pasha was an Ottoman officer, diplomat and minister whose career spanned military reform and European diplomacy. Educated in the palace establishment, he entered the new army in 1826 and later served on diplomatic assignments in Vienna and Paris. His government responsibilities included commerce and the imperial artillery establishment.
In 1840 he married Atiye Sultan, a daughter of Mahmud II, and lived in her Bebek residence. After her death he returned to his waterfront house at Kuzguncuk. His connection with the dynasty was through marriage, while his public position rested on military and administrative service.
He purchased the Kuzguncuk yalı from İsmet Bey in the late 1830s and extensively renovated it. The older plan was largely retained while windows and decoration were adapted to contemporary Empire taste. He also added a separate family building linked by a corridor. His documented contribution was the acquisition and remodelling of an existing residence, whose original construction date remains uncertain.
