Topkapı developed under Mehmed II after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul and expanded through additions by later sultans. For nearly four centuries it combined the ruler’s residence with government, education and court ceremony. Its successive courtyards organise a complex of halls, service buildings, private apartments and garden pavilions.

Türkiye → Edirne Province → Edirne → Tunca Palace Landscape
Edirne Palace was one of the great pre-Istanbul and early-imperial residences of the Ottoman court. Built beside the Tunca River on a vast estate, it developed into a complex of pavilions, service buildings, gardens and ceremonial spaces. Only fragments survived earthquakes, fires, warfare and later destruction, but the site remains fundamental to the history of Ottoman palace architecture.

The Ihlamur valley had been used as an imperial garden and leisure landscape before Abdülmecid commissioned two new pavilions between 1848 and 1855. The ensemble, also called Nüzhetiye, belonged to the intimate side of court life: rest, reading, reception and entertainment rather than principal government.

Şale developed in three major phases. Its early core belongs to the late nineteenth century; major additions in 1889 and 1898 were connected with the visits of German Emperor Wilhelm II. The later sections were designed as exceptionally elaborate state-guest accommodation inside Abdülhamid II's imperial palace system.

After the conquest of Constantinople, Mehmed II established an imperial palace at Beyazıt before the construction of the later New Palace at Sarayburnu. That distinction gave Topkapı its long-used historical designation Saray-ı Cedîd-i Âmire — the New Imperial Palace — in contrast to the Old Palace.
