From Bursa to Constantinople — 1326–15th century

Historical focus: 1326–15th century. Dates describe the main subject, not the publication date; later afterlives may also appear.

The Moving Capitals of the Early Ottoman Court

The Ottoman palace did not begin at Topkapı.

Its first known sovereign palace stood in Bursa.

After the conquest of Bursa in 1326, Orhan Gazi made the city the centre of the expanding Ottoman polity and built the Bey Sarayı inside the citadel.

The palace looked over the plain from the area now known as Tophane.

Bursa — The First Palace

Bursa Palace belonged to the period when the Ottoman state was still transforming from frontier principality into territorial monarchy.

Its loss makes it easy to overlook.

But academically it is fundamental: TDV identifies Bursa Palace as the first known Ottoman palace.

The court already possessed a sovereign architectural centre before it moved toward Thrace.

Edirne — Two Palaces

After the conquest of Edirne, Murad I established another palace near the later Selimiye area.

This became Edirne Eski Sarayı — the Old Palace.

For a time Bursa and Edirne were both used.

The early Ottoman court therefore did not move through simple replacement.

It maintained multiple sovereign residences.

Under Murad II, a second Edirne palace was created beside the Tunca River.

That later complex became the great Edirne Saray-ı Cedîd-i Âmire.

Constantinople

When Mehmed II conquered Constantinople in 1453, the palace sequence expanded again.

First came the Old Palace at Beyazıt.

Then Topkapı — Saray-ı Cedîd-i Âmire, the New Imperial Palace.

The vocabulary itself preserved memory of the old and the new.

A Pattern Established Early

This pattern continued for centuries.

A new palace did not always erase the old one.

Bursa and Edirne overlapped.

Edirne remained important after Constantinople.

Eski Saray remained relevant after Topkapı.

Topkapı remained symbolically central after Dolmabahçe.

The Ottoman court accumulated residences.

Why It Matters

The history of Ottoman palaces is not Istanbul history alone.

It begins in Bursa.

It develops in Edirne.

Only then does it become Constantinople.

That sequence changes the meaning of Topkapı.

Topkapı was not the first Ottoman palace.

It was the mature expression of a palace tradition already more than a century old.
