Topkapı Palace

Palace profile from the existing Turkey catalogue.

History & Character

Topkapı developed under Mehmed II after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul and expanded through additions by later sultans. For nearly four centuries it combined the ruler’s residence with government, education and court ceremony. Its successive courtyards organise a complex of halls, service buildings, private apartments and garden pavilions.

The State Council, palace school and Harem served different parts of court life. Although the sultans moved to Dolmabahçe in the nineteenth century, Topkapı retained ceremonial and historical importance. It became a museum in 1924. Its surviving ensemble should be understood as a palace built in stages, not a single building designed at one time.
