RPR-TUR-022 · DYNASTIC FAMILY COMPLEX
Feriye Palaces
The secondary Ottoman dynastic residences extending between Çırağan and Ortaköy.
The Story
The word feriye referred to secondary or auxiliary palaces. The complex expanded along the Bosphorus near Çırağan to accommodate members of the imperial family rather than the reigning sultan alone. Surviving structures later entered educational and hospitality use.
1876
The complex also became associated with the final days and controversial death of the deposed Sultan Abdülaziz.
Why It Matters
Feriye demonstrates that the Ottoman sovereign palace system included a residential belt for the dynasty itself.
