Cairo Citadel — Seven Centuries Above the City

A fortress initiated under Salah al-Din evolved into the sovereign, ceremonial and governmental centre of medieval Cairo.

The Story

Construction of the Cairo Citadel began under Salah al-Din in the 1170s. Its role developed under his successors: Egyptian heritage sources identify al-Kamil as the first ruler to establish his residence there. Under the Mamluks, the southern enclosure became a major palatial environment of audience halls, justice spaces, residences and state administration.

The Citadel therefore cannot be treated as a single palace frozen in time. It is a parent complex whose royal architecture was repeatedly constructed, demolished and rebuilt by successive rulers.

Why It Matters

The Citadel marks a decisive shift from the Fatimid palace-city to the fortress-palace. It also provides the long historical counterpoint to the nineteenth-century transfer of Egypt's ruling seat from the Citadel to Abdeen Palace.
