Beyond the Citadel
Construction began only a few years after Muhammad Ali became ruler. Shubra represents the early moment when the new dynasty began creating residential architecture of its own outside the inherited political world of the Citadel.
A Complex, Not One Building
The estate included a residential palace, Fountain Palace, Gabalaya-related structures, gardens, service buildings and water infrastructure. It should therefore be treated as a parent palace complex.
Why It Matters
Shubra is the architectural beginning of the modern dynastic palace network that would later include Ras El Tin, Abdeen, Qubba, Gezira and Montaza.
