Great Palace of Amarna

Plan a visit

Access not confirmed — The Amarna Project provides visitor information for the wider archaeological site, but its current suggested itinerary does not explicitly confirm admission to this particular palace. Confirm the palace area with the site ticket office; access to Amarna is not proof that every excavation area is open.

18th Dynasty

History & Character

The Great Palace formed part of the royal centre of Amarna and extended for at least 580 metres beside the Royal Road. Its stone state apartments and mud-brick eastern apartments combined ceremonial spaces, gardens and storerooms. A raised bridge linked the complex to the King’s House across the road.

Painted pavements, faience decoration and fragments of carved stone reveal elaborate interiors. Much of the stonework was removed after the city’s abandonment, so the plan is reconstructed from excavated remains and foundation impressions. Some proposed room functions remain interpretations.
