A Palace for an International Court
Gezira Palace belonged to Khedive Ismail's cosmopolitan Cairo and is closely associated with the international world surrounding the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
Royal Hospitality
Unlike Abdeen, Gezira was not primarily the machinery of government. It belonged to reception, ceremony and hospitality — a reminder that royal courts needed buildings designed to host as well as rule.
Palace to Hotel
The former palace survives as the historic central component of today's Cairo Marriott complex. Later towers and facilities are additions, so the entire present hotel must not be described as the former palace.
Why It Matters
Gezira is a textbook Royal Palace Hotel case: a verified royal palace survives inside an active hotel complex, with later hospitality architecture built around the historic core.
