Prince Muhammad Ali Tawfiq
Egyptian prince / residence owner / collector and patron of Islamic art
1875–1955
Who they were
Prince Muhammad Ali Tawfiq was a son of Khedive Tewfik and Amina Ilhami, and a brother of Khedive Abbas II Hilmi. Born in Cairo in 1875, he belonged to a later generation than Muhammad Ali Pasha, the dynasty’s founder. These similar names refer to different people.
The Manial museum describes his wide-ranging interests in Islamic art, collecting, Arabian horses and travel. He sought rare objects through specialist agents, while gifts and inherited possessions also entered his collection. His published accounts of journeys record places he visited during the early twentieth century.
He established the Manial palace complex between 1900 and 1929. Its reception, residential and throne buildings, private museum and mosque brought different functions into one landscaped estate. Persian, Mamluk, Ottoman and other Islamic artistic traditions informed its decoration. His collecting and patronage explain the ensemble’s character, while the museum distinguishes the individual buildings and their uses.
