The Nineteenth Dynasty

The Court Moves North

Pi-Ramesses

Under Ramesses II, the eastern Delta became the centre of a great royal capital. Palace, administration, military organization and production formed a single political landscape.

The Ramesseum shows a different function: a ceremonial palace associated with a monumental religious complex rather than the primary capital residence.

Why It Matters

One ruler could possess different palace environments for different purposes. The court was a network rather than one official home.
