EGYPT · AFTER THE MONARCHY · 1952–PRESENT
After the Kings
What Became of Egypt’s Royal Palaces?
The monarchy ended. The buildings did not. Egypt’s royal residences entered radically different second lives as presidential palaces, museums, universities, cultural institutions and hotels.
26 July 1952
King Farouk abdicated on 26 July 1952 in favour of his infant son, Fuad II. Farouk departed Egypt from Ras El Tin Palace aboard the royal yacht Al-Mahroussa.
18 June 1953
Fuad II remained formally king until 18 June 1953, when the monarchy was abolished and Egypt was declared a republic. The political institution ended, but its architectural infrastructure was too important, too large and too useful simply to disappear.
The Palace After Monarchy
Royal Palaces records this later life as part of provenance. A palace does not stop having a history when the dynasty leaves. Its republican, institutional or commercial use becomes another phase in the same building biography.

A New Registry Dimension
This later history is stored as Function History, not merely Current Use. Each record can therefore show a sequence such as Private Residence → Hotel → Royal Palace → Presidential Palace, as at Al-Safa, or Royal Palace → Hotel Complex, as at Gezira.
This makes the afterlife of the palace a searchable part of the project: Still Royal · Presidential · Museum · University · Hotel · Cultural Institution · Ruin · Lost.
