Royal Palaces You Can Stay In

Royal provenance first. Hotel branding second.

A verified register of Egyptian royal residences and lodges that later entered hospitality — separated from hotels that merely use the word “Palace”.

Gezira Palace

Local name: قصر الجزيرة · Cairo · 1869 · Khedive Ismail

Built under Khedive Ismail and now forming the historic central section of the Cairo Marriott Hotel. The later hotel towers are additions, so the registry distinguishes the original palace fabric from the modern accommodation complex.

Classification: Authentic Royal Palace in an active hotel complex.

Salamlek Palace, Montaza

Local name: قصر السلاملك · Alexandria · Muhammad Ali Dynasty

A genuine royal summer residence associated with Khedive Abbas II Hilmi. Current Rixos Montaza inventory includes Salamlek Palace suites, making it a particularly important candidate for the collection “Royal Palaces You Can Stay In”.

Classification: Authentic Royal Palace with bookable accommodation.

Mena House — Khedivial Hunting Lodge

Giza · 1869 · Khedive Ismail

The property originated as a royal hunting/rest lodge before passing into private ownership and developing into a hotel. Its royal provenance is real; however, the precise extent of surviving 1869 fabric requires a dedicated architectural audit before we claim that a present-day guest can sleep inside the original khedivial lodge.

Classification: Verified Royal Lodge → Hotel; original-fabric audit pending.

Palace in Name, Not Royal Provenance

Winter Palace Luxor — historic luxury hotel, not a pharaonic or dynastic royal residence. It belongs in the Palace Claims Registry and in Grand Hotels, not in the Royal Palace Registry.

Baron Empain Palace — an authentic historic building called a palace, but a private residence rather than a residence of a ruling house. It is retained as a non-royal palace reference, not an RPR record.

Editorial Rule

A hotel is never admitted to this collection because its brand uses the word “Palace”. We verify who commissioned the building, its original function, its dynastic occupants, the surviving historic fabric and whether present-day hotel accommodation actually occupies that fabric.

Al-Ittihadiya Palace — A Palace Today, a Hotel by Origin

The current presidential building known as Al-Ittihadiya Palace originated as the Heliopolis Palace Hotel, built in 1908–1910 and opened in December 1910. It hosted kings and wealthy international guests, but guest use does not create royal-residence provenance. Egypt acquired the building for government use in 1958; its later presidential identity is real, while its royal provenance is not.

What About Genuine Non-Royal Palaces?

Buildings such as Baron Empain Palace are not “fake palaces.” They are genuine historic palaces of non-royal owners and now belong in the separate NRP — Noble & Elite Palaces Registry.
