Before the Sultanate
Hussein Kamel lived in the Heliopolis palace before becoming Sultan of Egypt in 1914. That fact gives the building direct royal-residential provenance, not merely later association with a titled widow.
Sultana Malak
After Hussein Kamel’s death, the palace became closely associated with his second wife, Sultana Malak, whose name it still commonly bears.
After the Monarchy
The palace later passed into state use, was listed as a protected historic building and has undergone restoration and adaptive reuse.
Why It Matters
Sultana Malak Palace helps distinguish three layers that are often blurred: private ownership, dynastic residence, and sovereign-period royal use. Here all three intersect.
