Interiors and collections

Ceremony, residence and household work

Created in 1899 for Crown Prince Yoshihito, later Emperor Taishō, Tamozawa was substantially enlarged in 1918–1921. Tochigi Prefecture’s heritage description distinguishes a formal area centred on the audience hall, imperial residential rooms, and service accommodation including kitchens and ladies’ quarters. This division helps explain the functions of the interconnected rooms.

A carefully detailed wooden residence

The Imperial Household Ministry supervised the complex from its overall arrangement to individual details and the selection of materials. Most of the building is single-storeyed, with some sections rising to two or three storeys. The prefecture describes approximately 4,500 square metres of building area; this is an architectural measure, not visitor capacity. Restoration preceded partial public opening in August 2000.

Dining-room special opening: autumn 2026

The park has announced access inside the dining room used in daily life by Emperor Taishō and Empress Teimei from 19 October to 15 November 2026, with ordinary admission and no closure days during that event. This is a dated special opening, not a year-round promise of entry into the room. Consult the official event notice before travelling; other rooms remain subject to the visitor route.

Related owners: Crown Prince Yoshihito / Emperor Taishō.
