History & Conservation
Louis-Philippe commissioned this South Wing gallery for the Museum of the History of France. Begun in 1833 and inaugurated in 1837, it belongs to the palace’s museum phase rather than its original residential apartments. [SRC-FRA-105]
Frédéric Nepveu designed the architecture; Versailles describes Fontaine’s advice as highly probable. The decorative programme includes 33 battle paintings and 80 busts of officers killed in combat. [SRC-FRA-105]
