Cabinets intérieurs de Marie-Antoinette
Eighteenth century; modern restoration campaigns
Creative authors: Richard Mique (Gold Room and library); Rousseau brothers (carved decoration in selected rooms); Pierre Gouthière (Méridienne door bronzes)
History & Conservation
The queen’s private rooms lie beyond the ceremonial State Apartments. The Gold Room received its present decorative scheme in 1784 under Richard Mique, with panelling by the Rousseau brothers. [SRC-FRA-103]
Mique built the library in 1779–1781; an extension followed in 1783. The library was restored in 2017–2020. Restoration of the Méridienne included recreated textiles, so the current presentation combines historic work and later conservation. [SRC-FRA-103]
