Chapelle de la Trinité
Construction from 1540; major decoration 1608–1638
Creative authors: Gilles Le Breton and Philibert Delorme (architecture); Martin Fréminet (painted programme); Francesco Bordoni (high altar)
History & Conservation
Construction of the present chapel began in 1540 under Francis I and continued under Henry II. Fréminet’s decoration began in 1608; work continued after his death, including Bordoni’s high altar. [SRC-FRA-108]
The chapel hosted the marriage of Louis XV and Marie Leszczyńska in 1725. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century restoration campaigns altered or reinstated parts of the decoration; its present appearance is not an untouched sixteenth-century ensemble. [SRC-FRA-108]
