Ann Coleman
Scientist, co-owner and restoration patron of Villandry
Acquired Villandry with Joachim Carvallo in 1906
A scientist and co-owner
Ann Coleman was an American scientist and an heiress to an industrial fortune. She and her husband Joachim Carvallo acquired Villandry together in 1906. The official estate history identifies both partners in the purchase and restoration. Her place in this history is therefore that of a co-owner and patron whose resources helped sustain the project.
Restoring a family residence
The estate’s press dossier presents the acquisition as a shared change of direction: Ann and Joachim left scientific careers to devote themselves to the property. Their first years concentrated on the château, recovering its Renaissance architectural character while establishing a family home. That account connects the restoration to the couple’s decisions and resources, rather than to the work of a single owner.

A house opened to visitors
The estate chronology dates the purchase to December 1906, the garden campaign to 1908–1918 and public opening to 1920. Together these dates show the progression from acquisition through restoration to a residence accessible to visitors.

Understanding the garden legacy
The gardens underwent further changes after the original restoration campaign, including the herb garden in the 1970s and the Sun Garden in 2008. Their present appearance includes later contributions alongside the work undertaken during Ann and Joachim’s ownership.
