Life: 1461–1522; Duchess of Bourbon from 1488

Royal princess and regent

Anne of France, daughter of Louis XI, lived from 1461 to 1522. She and her husband Pierre de Beaujeu governed during the minority of her brother Charles VIII. They became Duke and Duchess of Bourbon in 1488. Her role at Moulins combined princely authority with patronage.

A shared building programme

Anne and Pierre enlarged the ducal residence with a long residential range and a Renaissance gallery. Their work extended an older palace rather than creating the entire complex. The museum occupies a surviving part of this later architectural programme.

Patronage beyond the building

The Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu places Anne and Pierre II within the artistic development of the Bourbonnais around the end of the fifteenth and beginning of the sixteenth centuries. Its sculpture collections offer evidence of the regional workshops and courtly art of this period. A separate presentation of ducal history uses models, architectural remains and decorative fragments to explain the Bourbons’ influence in Moulins and the surrounding territory.

Following her legacy in Moulins

The museum collections and the surviving ducal buildings provide complementary ways to explore this history: one presents works and fragments, while the other preserves parts of the residential setting. The residence entry links the historical palace to its present visitor arrangements. Anne is listed here as a royal family member and patron, with her regency and ducal title stated explicitly.
