Jacques Cœur
Merchant / royal treasurer / palace commissioner
Palace construction: 1443–1451
Who they were
Jacques Cœur was a wealthy merchant who became treasurer to Charles VII. His private residence in Bourges was built between 1443 and 1451. Its elaborate Gothic architecture made commercial success and royal service visible in the city. The palace belongs to the history of elite private households: its commissioner’s office at court did not make it a royal residence.
