Jacques Le Veneur
Court gentleman / owner and patron of Carrouges
Owner from 1634; died 1653
Who they were
Jacques Le Veneur was a Norman nobleman and gentleman of Louis XIII’s household. His elder brother Tanneguy II served as an ambassador and helped negotiate the marriage of Henrietta Maria of France to the future Charles I. Jacques’s building patronage developed within this family’s close connections to the royal court.
He became owner of Carrouges in 1634 after Tanneguy withdrew to the family’s Tillières estates. Until his death in 1653, Jacques continued improvements to the château and gardens begun by earlier generations.
In 1648 he commissioned a formal state apartment from architect Maurice Gabriel and woodcarver François Albot, both from Argentan. The project gives a precise link between the owner and the interior: Jacques was its patron, while Gabriel and Albot supplied architectural and decorative expertise. The classical gardens also formed part of the improvements entrusted to Gabriel.
