Jean-Baptiste Colbert

Royal minister / owner and patron of Sceaux

1619–1683

Who they were

Jean-Baptiste Colbert was a leading minister of Louis XIV. From a merchant family, he entered state service in 1640 and became a minister in 1661. His responsibilities included royal finances, the king’s household, the navy and the administration of royal buildings, arts and manufactures.

His work connected finance with industry, overseas trade and colonial expansion. He also supported scientific institutions, including the Académie des Sciences. These public responsibilities explain his influence over royal building and artistic projects; they do not make him the owner of the royal palaces he administered.

Sceaux was his own estate, purchased in 1670. He enlarged the château and employed André Le Nôtre for the gardens. After his death in 1683, his son, the Marquis de Seignelay, continued its development. The current château is a later replacement, so Colbert’s ownership refers to the earlier residence and historic estate.
