Jeanne de Balsac, Lady of Montal
Noblewoman / estate owner and commissioner of Montal
Building campaign 1519–1534; died 1559
An owner commissions her own residence
Jeanne de Balsac inherited the fief in 1503. Widowed in 1510 after the death of Amaury de Montal, she commissioned the rebuilding of Montal under a contract dated 1519. The regional heritage inventory records a foundation inscription dated 1523 naming her as the patron. Her role is documented directly in the building’s history.
Family memory in stone
The courtyard presents seven sculpted family portraits, placing Jeanne among her relatives. Her daughters are represented differently, through marriage heraldry on an interior fireplace. The sculptural programme makes family relationships part of the visitor’s experience of the residence: architecture, portraiture and heraldry work together to express lineage.
A project left unfinished
The inventory dates the main campaign to 1519–1534. Two wings were completed out of four planned. Both of Jeanne’s sons died before her; after her death in 1559, her grandson Gilles inherited the seigneury. The surviving L-shaped residence therefore represents an interrupted project rather than the full scheme originally envisaged.
