Louis Cahen d’Anvers
Banker / collector / owner and restoration patron
1837–1922
Who they were
Louis Cahen d’Anvers was a banker and art collector. In 1895 he and his wife Louise acquired Champs-sur-Marne, where their wealth supported a major restoration of the château and grounds.
Architect Walter Destailleur restored the house, while Henri and Achille Duchêne reshaped the gardens. The couple combined eighteenth-century art and furniture with modern domestic services. The interiors consequently reflect their collecting and restoration as well as earlier decoration.
His son Charles gave the estate to the state in 1935. That donation belongs to the next generation and should not be attributed to Louis. His documented role at Champs is that of owner, collector and patron of its late-nineteenth-century revival.
