Nicolas Fouquet
Superintendent of Finances / statesman / palace commissioner
Life: 1615–1680
Who they were
Nicolas Fouquet became Superintendent of Finances in 1653. At Vaux-le-Vicomte he brought together architect Louis Le Vau, painter and decorator Charles Le Brun, and garden designer André Le Nôtre. The residence embodied his wealth and patronage. He hosted Louis XIV there in August 1661, was arrested the following month, and later died in imprisonment. His biography connects the palace to the power and vulnerability of a senior royal official.
