Bois-de-Coulonge — villa of 1863 (lost)
Canada → Quebec → Québec
This record concerns the replacement villa built in 1863, not the earlier Spencer Wood house destroyed in 1860. The later building became a setting for Quebec’s viceregal household and ceremonial life. Fire destroyed it on 21 February 1966, killing Lieutenant Governor Paul Comtois. The villa was never rebuilt; a hedge now evokes its outline. Its interiors therefore belong to documentary history, while the surviving public park offers a landscape visit rather than a tour of palace rooms.
Visiting
The public park and the former villa’s marked location can be explored through the official heritage trail. No surviving furnished villa interior is offered. Consult the park operator for current access conditions and any temporary restrictions.
