Rideau Hall
Canada → Ontario → Ottawa
Thomas MacKay built the original villa in 1838 for his family. Since 1867, Rideau Hall has served as the official residence of Canada’s governors general. Its transformation from a private house into a setting for public ceremony illustrates the changing role of the Crown’s representative. Later additions include the Tent Room, built in 1876–1878, and the Minto Wing of 1898–1899. The record concerns the residence, not every separate building on the estate.
Visiting
State rooms can be visited on guided tours. Consult the official reservation calendar; a working residence may change its programme. The published annual closure is 21 December 2026–3 January 2027. Access to the grounds does not imply access to private rooms.
