Peter III, born Karl Peter Ulrich of Holstein-Gottorp in Kiel in 1728, connects the Gottorp ducal family with the Russian imperial succession. His mother Anna Petrovna gave birth to him at Kiel Castle. This is evidence of a birth at Kiel, not evidence that he lived at Gottorf Castle. Modern Germany and Russia are geographic catalogue headings, not interchangeable historical states.
