Princely Hôtel Particulier

History & Character

Pierre Alexis Delamair built the Hôtel de Rohan in 1705–1708 for Armand Gaston de Rohan, the future cardinal. It stood beside his parents’ Soubise residence, sharing the garden setting. Later refurbishment produced the rocaille reception rooms, including Christophe Huet’s Salon des Singes.

Assigned to the imperial printing works in 1808, the mansion subsequently underwent major alterations. The Archives nationales took it over in 1927. Restoration in the 1930s reinstated the staircase and moved the Salon des Fables here from a demolished wing of the Hôtel de Soubise.

The ground floor now also contains interiors rescued from the demolished Chancellerie d’Orléans. Their reassembly was inaugurated in 2021. These rooms are historic decorative ensembles relocated to Rohan, rather than the cardinal’s original ground-floor interiors; the distinction is essential to understanding the building.

Interiors and collections

The Monkey Salon and a transferred Fables Salon

The reception apartment was redecorated for Cardinal François Armand de Rohan in 1751–1753; Christophe Huet supplied the Monkey Salon’s painted decoration. The Fables Salon has a different origin: made for Soubise around 1736, it was reassembled at Rohan in 1938. These rooms should not be treated as a single untouched commission.

The Chancellerie d’Orléans rooms

Four salvaged salons from the demolished Chancellerie were reassembled on Rohan’s ground floor and inaugurated in 2021. They include decoration redesigned by Charles De Wailly for the marquis de Voyer, with sculpture by Augustin Pajou. Painted ceilings include Antoine Coypel’s Triumph of Love over the Gods and Jean-Jacques Lagrenée’s Hebe serving nectar to Jupiter. This installation preserves interiors from another aristocratic residence; it is not the original ground-floor decoration of the Rohan family.

Visiting during restoration

According to the current Archives nationales visitor page, the Chancellerie interiors are accessible only on staff-led guided tours. The first floor, including the Monkey and Fables salons, and both the entrance and Chevaux du Soleil courtyards are closed during works. The route crosses a construction area and is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. Confirm arrangements with the operator before travelling.
