Aristocratic Hôtel Particulier / Institutional Headquarters
History & Character
The Hôtel de Sully began in 1624 as a private mansion commissioned by financier Mesme Gallet in the Marais. A garden, orangery and passage towards the Place Royale, now the Place des Vosges, formed part of its setting.
Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully and former minister of Henri IV, purchased it in 1634, completed its decoration and lived here in his later years. His grandson added a garden-side wing in 1660. The family gave the building the name it still bears, although Sully was not its original commissioner.
Nineteenth-century commercial and residential uses altered the mansion. The state acquired it in 1944 and undertook restoration, including the orangery. Since 1967 it has housed the institution now known as the Centre des monuments nationaux. Its courtyards and garden retain the spatial character of an elite Parisian residence.
