Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully
Duke / former minister of Henri IV / later residence owner
Residence acquired: 1634
Who they were
Maximilien de Béthune, first Duke of Sully, served Henri IV as a finance minister and superintendent of royal buildings. He bought the Marais mansion now bearing his name in 1634. The project had begun in 1624 for the financial official Mesme Gallet. Sully’s connection is therefore ownership of an existing residence, not its original commission. The distinction explains why the building’s name and the identity of its first patron differ.
