Elmsley Villa
Canada → Ontario → Toronto → former Elmsley Villa estate
The Earl of Elgin lived at Elmsley Villa as governor general in 1849–1851. A Parks Canada architectural study dates the villa to 1839, attributes its design to James Smith and identifies Colonel John Simcoe Macaulay as its client. It describes landscaped grounds and verandahs facing north and east. The trustees of Knox College acquired the building in 1854 and added student accommodation; it was demolished in 1921. Municipal accounts differ over its early commissioning, so that attribution remains source-specific. This villa is distinct from Elmsley House at King and Simcoe streets and from the neighbouring Cloverhill estate.
Visiting
The villa no longer survives. This is a historical residence record, not a visitor attraction or a surviving college interior. The former estate name covers a wider area and should not be mistaken for the footprint of the house.
