Government House at Fort York — 1800 residence

Canada → Ontario → Toronto → Fort York

Captain Robert Pilkington designed this single-storey, U-shaped government residence in 1800. Its occupants included Peter Hunter, Alexander Grant, Francis Gore, Isaac Brock and Roger Hale Sheaffe. It was destroyed during the American attack on York in 1813. The house belongs to the earlier history of the present fort site: surviving military buildings must not be presented as its intact residential rooms. An archaeological investigation using ground-penetrating radar and exploratory trenches examined the former Government House site in 2011; the report provides a building-specific research source alongside the official history.

Visiting

Visit Fort York for the historical setting, not a standing Government House. The City currently lists free general admission Wednesday–Sunday, 11:00–16:00, and 45-minute tours hourly from 11:00 to 15:00. Special events and groups may be charged. Excavation trenches are not advertised as a permanent open display; check the museum programme before travelling.
