Government House, Halifax
Canada → Nova Scotia → Halifax
Sir John Wentworth promoted a new residence after finding his Halifax accommodation unsuitable on arrival in 1792. The resulting Georgian house drew on the English country-house model, with balanced windows, hipped roofs and flanking chimneys. Its construction brought together materials from across Nova Scotia. Later furnishings and modern services changed the interiors; the present rooms are not an untouched original ensemble. The official account records a three-year renovation completed in November 2009 at a cost of 6.25 million Canadian dollars.
