Government House, St John’s
Canada → Newfoundland and Labrador → St John’s
Governor Thomas Cochrane selected the site and directed changes to the design of the new residence, completed in 1831. It replaced earlier gubernatorial accommodation rather than extending the same building. The central block and lower side wings use red sandstone from Signal Hill with Portland-stone trim. The official history gives an initial estimate of £8,778 and a final construction cost of £36,000. These are historical figures, not present-day valuations. The working residence retains ceremonial rooms on the main floor.
