Old Government House — Battleford
Canada → Saskatchewan → Battleford → Government Ridge
Government House combined the lieutenant governor’s residence with territorial offices and council chambers. David Laird lived here, and Battleford served as the seat of territorial government until 1883. The provincial heritage statement dates construction to 1876–1877; the federal register lists 1878–1879. These differing dates are retained rather than merged into a false precision. After government use, the building became an industrial residential school for First Nations children, part of federal assimilation policy, and later housed religious institutions. A June 2003 fire left foundations and a chimney. This is distinct from the commanding officer’s house at Fort Battleford.
Visiting
The building is a ruin, not an operating house museum. Heritage listings describe the surviving foundations and chimney but do not establish current public entry, opening hours or safe access to the remains. Confirm arrangements with the town before entering; Fort Battleford tickets do not establish access to this separate property.
