Silver Heights — historic residence

Canada → Manitoba → Winnipeg → Silver Heights

Silver Heights was a separate house from Government House at Upper Fort Garry. Associated with John Rowand Jr., it was used by Lieutenant Governor Adams George Archibald in 1871, whose letters identify it as Government House. Later owned by Donald Alexander Smith, it became a centre of hospitality; the Marquis of Lorne visited in 1881. Manitoba’s Historic Resources Branch records its destruction by fire on 24 November 1892. Later estate gates commemorate the property but are not surviving residential rooms.

Visiting

The historic house burned down and was not rebuilt. The surviving Silver Heights gates are a separate heritage feature; do not interpret them as an entrance to a house museum. No residential interiors can be visited.
