John Stripling House — governor’s lodging, 1779

Canada → Newfoundland and Labrador → St. John’s → Duke of York Street

Governor Richard Edwards occupied John Stripling’s house in summer 1779 while the planned Fort Townshend residence was unfinished. The official history describes an oak-framed dwelling, destroyed in the Great Fire of 1892. Its inclusion rests on documented gubernatorial occupation, not on the owner’s social status.

Visiting
