Spain: dynasties and royal residences

Who lived where and when?

Dynasties across countries

Bourbon: France and Spain · Habsburg: Austria and Spain

Shared family histories connect the country branches; residence dates remain attached to individual people and palaces.

Follow people to palaces and dated evidence. This first register covers two houses and three monarchs; it is not a complete history of the dynasties ruling territories in present-day Spain. Dates of construction, reign and residence are different kinds of evidence.

Philip V was the first Bourbon on the Spanish throne, from 1700. This entry follows him and Charles III; it does not imply uninterrupted Bourbon rule thereafter.

Philip II / Felipe II

Habsburg · Sixteenth century; died at El Escorial in 1598

Philip II made El Escorial a royal residence and dynastic foundation. His death in the royal apartments on 13 September 1598 provides a specific documented presence, not a continuous residence interval. At Aranjuez, his role as commissioner is separately recorded.

Philip V / Felipe V

Bourbon · First Spanish Bourbon; accession 1700; retreat at La Granja in 1724

Philip V established La Granja as a personal retreat and withdrew there in 1724. His return to the throne that year after the death of Louis I prevents treating the retreat as a permanent retirement. The royal site subsequently became a summer residence.

Charles III / Carlos III

Bourbon · Eighteenth century; Madrid move traditionally dated 1764

Charles III used a network of residences rather than one permanent home. Madrid became his capital residence after stays at the Buen Retiro; El Pardo served the winter court. Aranjuez records his architectural patronage in 1775. The sources consulted differ on the precise first occupation year of the new Madrid palace.

1633–1643: Philip IV and Buen Retiro / Felipe IV y el Buen Retiro

Philip IV: king and Buen Retiro / Felipe IV: rey y Buen Retiro

Olivares: aristocrat and promoter of Buen Retiro / Aristócrata e impulsor del Buen Retiro

Built under Philip IV at the initiative of the Count-Duke of Olivares, Buen Retiro combined royal accommodation with court entertainment and artistic display. The Prado dates the palace’s completion to 1633; later work continued across the wider complex. Theatre, festivities and equestrian spectacles formed part of its courtly use. This construction milestone does not establish a precise royal move-in date.

Paintings and interiors / Pintura e interiores

According to the Prado, around 800 paintings were acquired for the residence between 1633 and 1643. Artists represented included Velázquez, Zurbarán, Ribera, Poussin and Claude Lorrain. Many works later entered the Prado collection. This is a historical acquisition estimate, not a count of paintings now displayed in the surviving buildings.
