Court financier, industrial patron and palace owner
1656–1735
Born in the Baztán valley, Goyeneche built a career at the courts of Charles II and Philip V and invested in manufacturing. At Nuevo Baztán he joined a residence and church to a planned industrial community, working with José de Churriguera. The municipal biography identifies him as a court treasurer and the founder of the settlement. His court career and private investment help explain the combination of domestic, religious and industrial spaces at Nuevo Baztán.

Ducal owner and patron; host to Philip III’s court
Early seventeenth century
The Duke of Lerma commissioned a residence that also accommodated visits by Philip III’s court. Francisco de Mora’s design organised the palace around columned galleries and a ceremonial courtyard. The building’s position on the Plaza Mayor connects the duke’s household to the wider shape of the ducal town. Its later conversion to a hotel preserves an architectural setting for hospitality, but the present decoration should not be mistaken for the original ducal collection.

Marchioness of Ayerbe, palace owner, writer and social reformer
Born 1875; owner of Soutomaior from 1908
Born at Soutomaior, María Vinyals grew up in the circle of the Marquises of Vega de Armijo. She wrote a history of the castle published in 1904, as well as fiction and journalism. In 1908 she inherited the residence. With her second husband, physician Enrique Lluria, she developed a sanatorium beside the castle, inaugurated in 1913. Her interest in women’s education and independence gives the residence a social history extending beyond aristocratic hospitality. The present museum includes a section devoted to her life.

Lady of Lazcano, palace patron and convent founder
Seventeenth century; died 1664
María de Lazcano commissioned the family palace and shaped the neighbouring religious ensemble. She founded the Carmelite convent of Santa Teresa in 1640 and the Bernardine convent of Santa Ana in 1646. After becoming a widow, she entered Santa Ana in 1658 and lived there until her death in 1664. Her patronage connects the palace with the religious and civic history of Lazkao: the residence was part of a wider family landscape rather than an isolated mansion.

Count of Güell, industrialist, palace owner and patron of Antoni Gaudí
1846–1918; count from 1908
Eusebi Güell combined industrial enterprise, politics, collecting and artistic patronage. His commission to Antoni Gaudí for the Palau Güell created a family residence in Barcelona between 1886 and 1890. Contemporary accounts of visits to the house provide evidence of its rooms and collections, rather than merely its exterior architecture. Alfonso XIII granted him the title Count of Güell in 1908, after the palace had been built. His role should therefore be distinguished from that of Gaudí: Güell was the owner and patron, while Gaudí designed the building.

Countess of Torre Arias, palace owner and foundation founder
1923–2012
Tatiana Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno inherited the family legacy associated with the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo. She was Countess of Torre Arias and the first president of the foundation bearing her name. Her collections and documentary heritage underpin the palace museum opened in 2015, after her death. The visitor therefore encounters a family legacy preserved and interpreted by a foundation, rather than rooms occupied by a present-day countess. Her connection to the palace links aristocratic inheritance with its later public cultural use.
